WelcomeWe are pleased to introduce the first DC-POWER
project newsletter, where we present the progress and events attended
by the consortium, as we reach the six-month milestone of the project.
The EU-funded DC-POWER
project aims at developing and promoting the Medium Voltage DC Grids
for the local distribution of electricity starting in the MW range. The
project introduces the D3Bus (Dual DC Distribution Bus), a bipolar DC bus operating at ±1.5 kV.
This technological marvel is set a significant transformation, reducing
distribution energy losses by over 50% and slashing downtime, while
reducing equipment costs, and space requirements, and so increasing
sustainability. DC-POWER demonstrates, tests and validates the D3Bus
concept in 2 operational pilots: A Hydrogen Electrolyser pilot in Italy by McPhy and a Data Centre in Slovenia by Jozef Stefan Institute.

DC-POWER Kick-off MeetingThe
beginning of 2024 marked the start of the DC-POWER 4-years project,
where the consortium met in the beautiful French Alps region, Chambéry,
hosted by the project coordinator, CEA.
In the kick-off-meeting, the 10 European partners had the chance to organize the work of this complex project.

Representations at EventsIn the first six months, the DC-POWER has been represented in 2 events:
|
Second General Assembly | On June 26th and 27th, partners from France, Spain, Germany and Switzerland held their General Assembly at the WIP premises in Munich, Germany.
Main
point of this fruitful meeting was the common approval of the system
concept and electrical specification of the components of the DC-POWER
project.
The partners also worked on a user needs analysis based on exchanges
with different relevant sectors for the D3Bus system to ensure that the
system is adapted to the market needs. The analysis helped to start
defining the system architecture and components requirements.
|
Fruthermore decisions have been taken on the pilots of the project:
- The hydrogen electrolyser pilot site will take place in San Miniato, Italy with a power of 1MW.
- The datacenter pilot site near Ljubljana, Slovenia with a power of 130kW.
Overall,
the DC-power system concept is now shaped and the architecture has been
defined to shift to DC grids in the Medium voltage range.

What's next?With
the approval of the electrical requirements, the development of the
power converters of the project have started, and the first prototypes
are expected in middle of 2025.
Meet us at Enlit Europe (Milan/Italy, 22-24 October 2024)! DC-POWER will be represented in EU project Zone. Stay tuned for more information!
